PUH-tubuan

The root word 'tubo' has different meanings in Filipino. It may refer to:

a. growth

b. profit from interest

c. native

'PUH-tubuan' is derived from the word 'patubuan' which is taken to mean 'plant nursery'. It is an extension of the PUH, complementing the fixed plant specimens preserved in the herbarium with growing ones. While it was not established for profit, the nursery is a venue for those interested to gain insights from observing plant recruitment or to propagate preferrably native tree and shrub species. It may be a source of data for botanical research or of seedlings for rehabilitation.

At present, PUH-tubuan has grown:

(native tree and shrub species)

Dillenia sibuyanensis

Dillenia luzoniensis

Lepisanthes fruticosa

Mangifera indica

Quassia amara

Artocarpus blancoi

Clerodendrum intermedium

Ormosia calavensis

Leea

(others)

Thunbergia

Triplaris cumingiana

The number of seedlings and their growth rates are being noted weekly. Over time, the number of recruits and their heights were observed to be constantly increasing until two succeeding typhoons struck the country last July. The Dillenia species suffered the most from the downpour.

Establishing of the nursery.

Labels of planted species.

First species to germinate, Triplaris cumingiana.
